Iraqi gov't arrests police officers for misconduct in Mosul

BAGHDAD, Aug 17 (KUNA) -- A number of Iraqi federal police officers have been arrested and referred to judiciary over official misconduct against civilians in Mosul city, the Iraqi Cabinet announced Thursday.
Allegations of official misconduct by the police in Mosul were first published through news reports and photo features by German weekly news magazine "Der Spiegel" last June, Iraqi government spokesman Saad Al-Hadithi.
The German magazine's reports prompted the Iraqi government to investigate the situation in Mosul, Al-Hadithi said, adding that investigations found various violations and misdemeanors by a number of police personnel, including the rapid response squad.
The interrogating committee, in charge of the case, has documented all violations against the civilians, including physical assaults and death threats, he noted, adding that the government is currently awaiting the legal procedures against the officers in accordance with the country's law.
