Floods kill 150 people, displace millions others in India

NEW DELHI, Aug 16 (KUNA) -- Around 150 people were killed while millions others displaced following floods in various Indian states triggered by torrential seasonal rains, official media reported Wednesday.
The eastern Indian state of Bihar recorded 72 deaths, while some seven million people were displaced as floods inundated 14 districts and destroyed hundreds of thousands of huts, building, roads and bridges, according to the Press Trust of India.
The floods also destroyed cultivations worth some billions of Indian rupees in Kisanganj, Araria, Purnea, Katihar districts, it said, noting that other districts such as Sitamarhi, West Champaran, Madhubani, Darbhanga, and Sheohar remain under threat.
Around 39 people were killed in the second wave of floods In the northeastern state of Assam, while some 3.3 million people were displaced in 24 districts, it said, indicating that 84 people died in floods that hit the state in April to June.
North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh also recorded 23 deaths due to floods in 890 villages in 19 districts.
Water level in 14 rivers rose to danger level in Uttar Pradesh threatening lives of millions.
Current deluge also killed 12 people in West Bengal while around 50 people were killed in floods that hit the state in July. (end) atk.ma
