KUWAIT, July 9 (KUNA) -- 1938 -- His Highness (the late) Amir Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issued constituent laws of the National Assembly. First article stated the National Assembly represented by its elected members held the authority of drafting laws and the Speaker represented the legislative authority.
1963 -- Kuwait's Arts Association was established.
1977 -- Kuwait Airways flight 707 was hijacked, with 45 passengers and 10 crew members on board. The passengers included the Kuwaiti Ambassador to Beirut, Abdulhameed Al-Buaijan. The hijacker, a Palestinian named "Abu Tha'r," demanded release of 17 of his men detained by a pro-Syrian faction, called the Palestinian Liberation Army.
1990 -- His Highness the (late) Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah inaugurated the first ordinary session of the National Assembly. Abdulaziz Al-Musaeed was elected as its speaker and Rashid Al-Juwaisri as his deputy.
1991 -- His Highness (the late) Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah inaugurated the second session of the National Assembly. He urged the members to make great efforts, promptly take actions, and fulfill duties in a short time before parliamentary elections, due in October 1992.
1995 -- The Cabinet issued a resolution abolishing the State Security Court due to lack of justifications that necessitated its establishment.
1997 -- A Kuwait Airways plane landed at Queen Alia Airport near the Jordanian capital, re-launching the Kuwait-Amman flight route which was suspended following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990.
1998 -- Kuwait signed with the Caribbean Antigua and Barbuda Island countries a joint statement, establishing diplomatic ties.
2001 -- Abdulaziz Al-Musaeed passed away at the age of 86. He had played an important role during the country's development after independence in 1961, faithfully serving his country throughout his life. He was a member of the National Assembly in 1963, 1967, 1971, and 1975, in addition to chairing it in 1990 and publishing the first daily newspaper, "Al-Rai Al-Aam".
2001 -- A charity for service of the Holy Quran and Sharia teachings was established, aimed at spreading Islamic awareness and encouraging religious studies in the Kuwaiti society.
2003 -- The Kuwaiti ship, "Harbi," arrived from the United Arab Emirates. This boom (dhow) had been used for over half a century in trading in the Gulf. Its hull was 55 feet long and seven feet wide.
2008 -- Minister of Health Mohammad Al-Barrak inaugurated the Kuwait cancer center for radiation at Bin Sina Hospital. (end).
