Trump, Macron discuss need for "common response" to chemical attack in Syria

WASHINGTON, June 27 (KUNA) -- President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday discussed the need to "work toward a common response" to a possible chemical attack in Syria, according to a White House readout of their telephone conversation.
The presidents spoke a day after the White House said that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad may be preparing another chemical weapons attack. The White House statement said the Assad regime would pay a "heavy price" if it launched another such assault.
The two also discussed the situation in the Gulf "and the need to avoid any escalation in the region," the readout said. Both stressed that the fight against terrorism and its financing is a common challenge for all countries in the region, it said.
The leaders also discussed preparations for their bilateral meeting during the G-20 meeting in Hamburg on July 7 and 8, the statement said. (end) rm.bs
