US, Russian FMs discuss situation in Syria

MOSCOW, June 26 (KUNA) -- The development of the situation in Syria was the focus of a telephone call between US Secretary of State Rix Tellirson and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Monday.
The two sides also discussed means of reaching a settlement to the Syrian crisis, and the necessity of consolidating a ceasefire through Astana negotiations, Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The two ministers touched upon doubling efforts to counter terrorist groups and preventing the use of chemical weapons, the statement added.
Lavrov urged the US side not to attack Syrian forces combating terrorists.
The statement didn't mention any details on a scheduled meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G-20 summit to be held in Hamburg slated for July 7.
However, earlier today Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there would be a possible meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the summit. (end) as.hm
