UN's WFP announces entry of aid to Syria's Qamishli

ROME, June 22 (KUNA) -- The UN World Food Programme (WFP) on Thursday announced the entry of a convoy of humanitarian aid to Qamishli district in Al-Hasaka governorate, northeast of Syria, by land.
It is the first time to access aid to the area after a two-year blockade.
The convoy containing three trucks of life-saving food aid arrived in the district today to be distributed to families suffering from hunger for two years, WFP said in a statement.
The aid, accessed to the rea by land, covers 15,000 people over a month in Al-Hasakah, it said.
The improvement of security situation will contribute to increasing support to cover 250,000 people in the governorate, it said, adding that transferring aid by land is more effective in terms of cost than air transport.
The use of land to transport goods will save USD 19 million, a sum which is efficient to provide food aid to cover 100,000 people for two years, the statement noted.
WFP provides a monthly assistance to 4 million people across Syria, in addition to other kinds of aid. (end) mn.hm
