Director for the Middle East and North Africa Bureau and Regional Refugee Coordinator for Syria Amin Awad during his visit to the camps of displaced people of Mosul
IRBIL, June 21 (KUNA) -- The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is considering setting up an appropriate mechanism for returning the displaced people of Mosul home after liberating the city from the so-called Islamic State (IS), a UN official said.
The agency is studying the return of the displaced after liberation, the Kurdistan Regional Government said in a statement on Wednesday, citing Director for the Middle East and North Africa Bureau and Regional Refugee Coordinator for Syria Amin Awad.
This came during a meeting between Awad and Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani, it added.
The UN official lauded the government's role in receiving the largest number of the displaced and refugees, it said, noting that Awad promised to exert efforts to rally international support for the region.
Awad and his accompanying delegation paid a visit to the camps of the displaced to get acquainted with situations and means of resolving problems facing them.
For his part, the Premier reaffirmed that the government cannot fulfill the needs of the Syrian refugees and displaced Iraqis, urging the international organizations to make efforts to provide backing.
He stressed the necessity of restoring security in the areas liberated from the IS militants.
The region is hosting about 2 million of displaced Iraqis and Syrian refugees, which has aggravated its economic crisis. (end)
