KUWAIT, June 21 (KUNA) -- 1961 -- Iraqi ruler Abdulkarim Qassem launches a ferocious campaign against Britain, describing the 1899 treaty between Kuwait and Britain as fake.
1964 -- Polls were held for the first directly elected Municipal Council. Mohammad Al-Adsani was elected chairman, and the council's term continued to May 14, 1966.
1975 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issues a law endorsing the agreement for establishing the Arab Academy for Science Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT).
1976 -- Kuwait Cinema Club was established.
1978 -- Aouni Battash, in charge of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) office in Kuwait, survives an assassination attempt.
1982 -- Kuwait's National Football Team was defeated by France 1-4 during the World Cup finals held in Spain.
1996 -- KUNA signs a USD 1.3 million contract with AFP to upgrade the news agency's electronic editorial system.
1998 -- The Cabinet charges the minister of interior as well as the minister of commerce and industry with establishing the Businessmen Bureau at the state exits to facilitate entry of foreign entrepreneurs.
1999 -- A ceremony was held in Britain on the centennial anniversary of working out the 1899 British-Kuwaiti treaty.
2008 -- Athlete Abdulaziz Al-Mandeel wins gold medal in the 110-m hurdles race during the Arab Youth Track and Field Games held in Tunisia, after completing the race in 13.87 seconds.
2011 -- Al-Razi Hospital conducts four minimum technical procedures for the treatment of spine, considered to be the first within the GCC region.
2012 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah accepts resignation of the Cabinet, issued a decree in this regard.
2013 -- Renowned Kuwaiti author Saud Al-Sanousi was honored in Cairo for winning the Arab Booker Prize for his novel, "Saq Al-Bamboo" (The Bamboo Stalk). (end) hb
