US pres. reaffirms commitment to Mideast peace

RAMALLAH, May 23 (KUNA) -- Visiting US President Donald Trump on Tuesday reiterated Washington's commitment to working with both Palestinian and Israeli sides to achieve Middle East peace.
"I am committed to trying to achieve a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians and I intend to do everything I can to help them achieve that goal," Trump told a joint news conference with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
He added: "President Abbas assures me he is ready to work towards that goal in good faith, and Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu has promised the same. I look forward to working with these leaders towards a lasting peace." He believed that Israelis and Palestinians could achieve peace, leading up to a whole peace process in the entire Middle East region.
Furthermore, the US president condemned the bomb attack in Manchester that killed at least 22 people, calling the perpetrators "evil losers".
Standing alongside Trump, the Palestinian leader said he was determined to deliver an agreement for all Palestinians.
He renewed calls for an independent Palestinian state to be created on the 1967 border with East Jerusalem as its capital in line with international law and relevant agreements. (end) nq.mt
