US Senate approves USD 1.1 trillion spending bill

WASHINGTON, May 4 (KUNA) - The US Senate Thursday passed a USD 1.1 trillion spending bill in a bid to avert a government shutdown after weeks of wrangling.
The bill passed with a vote of 79-18, and no Democrats opposed it. It will last through September.
The bill does not include funding requested by the Trump Administration for the border wall intended to be built along the Mexican border, nor does it bar funding to sanctuary cities that protect undocumented immigrants, also as requested.
It will, however, cut funding to UN agencies by USD 640 million.
The Green Climate Fund, a key component of the Paris climate agreement, lost its funding entirely.
The Pentagon will receive USD 593 million, a 4 percent increase from last year. Included in that amount is USD 85 million which will be used to replace the cost of the Tomahawk missiles fired on a Syrian airbase last month.
The State Department will receive just over USD 53 billion, which includes foreign aid, and this amount reflects a USD 400 million increase.
The US President Donald Trump's request to slash funding for diplomatic programs was denied. (end) ys.ibi
