VIENNA, Aug 29 (KUNA) -- Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger
welcomed the formation of an international committee to investigate the Syrian
regime's practices against opposition demonstrators.
In light of its Human Rights Council membership, Austria has assisted in
cooperation with countries of the European Union, in taking the decision last
Tuesday, the minister said, quoted by Austrian television and radio reports.
According to the reports, he said that the patience of the world has run
out, and that President Bashar Al-Assad has ignored calls from the
international community to end the violence and carry out necessary reforms he
had vowed to engage, which is why he needs to step down.
The formation of an independent committee of legal experts to investigate
alleged crimes against humanity in Syria will pave the way for the issue to
reach the International Criminal Court.
The UN Human Rights Council (HRC) had in a majority vote condemned what it
deemed "serious and continued human rights breaches" on part of the Syrian
authorities against its people. (end)
