ISLAMABAD, March 7 (KUNA) -- Suspected Taliban militants attacked the
office of pro-government tribal peace committee in Pakistan's Mohmand tribal
agency, close to the Afghan border, killing one person, wounding seven others
and also kidnapping two people, said sources on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday in the agency's Baizai district, located
close to the Afghan border. According to security sources, militants attacked
committee's office with rockets and heavy weapons.
Sources told KUNA that the attack left one committee member killed and
seven others seriously wounded. They said that at least two of the peace
committee's volunteers have gone missing, fearing that they may have been
kidnapped.
Sources also said that the volunteers opened retaliatory fire and there was
an exchange of fire that continued for more than three hours. The committee's
office was completely destroyed in the attack, added sources.
Meanwhile, the local chapter of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed
responsibility for the attack.
In a telephonic call to local newsmen, Sajjad Mohmand, a purported Taliban
spokesman, claimed that seven volunteers were killed and three were wounded in
the attack. He also claimed that at least one volunteer is in their custody.
