CAIRO, Dec 19 (KUNA) -- The Arab Parliament (AP) decided Sunday to
participate in monitoring the referendum of self-determination in south Sudan,
slated for January 9 next year.
The house took the decision though a group of lawmakers said the monitoring
of voting would mean that the AP would stand a witness for a possible
separation of part of an Arab country, which contradicted with its principles
and objectives of Arab unity.
However, other Members of AP (MAPs) argued that the Arab Parliament should
respect the agreement signed with the referendum commission. They called for
not prejudging the outcome of the referendum.
The proposal was opposed by 17 MAPs out of the 88-seat house. (pickup
