U.S. official to travel to Asia, discuss transition in North Korea

WASHINGTON, Dec 29 (KUNA) -- U.S. Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell will travel to Asia next week to discuss the latest developments in North Korea and Burma.
The State Department said in a statement that Campbell will travel to China, the Republic of Korea (ROK), and Japan January 3-7, 2012 "to meet with senior officials to discuss a range of important bilateral, regional, and global issues, including latest developments related to North Korea and Burma". Campbell will arrive in Beijing on January 3 and his meetings in Beijing are described as "an important opportunity to continue to build a cooperative partnership with China on shared global challenges". Campbell will stop in Seoul on January 4 "to continue our close consultation and coordination on the broad range issues of importance to our alliance" before he travels to Tokyo on January 6 "to build on Foreign Minister Gemba's visit to Washington, DC in December, and reinforce our close cooperation with the Government of Japan".
