VIENNA, Nov 7 (KUNA) -- Ambassadors of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to
convene in an extraordinary meeting in Vienna on Tuesday at the request made
by Iran, and at a time when the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
prepares to issue a new report accusing Tehran of seeking to acquire nuclear
weapons.
Egypt, the current NAM chair, has called for the convening of this meeting
in a letter it circulated to NAM Member States in Vienna.
Iranian Ambassador to the IAEA Ali Asghar Soltanieh has called for the
convening of this meeting to brief the NAM ambassadors on his government's
position of the report, which will be circulated by the IAEA's Director
General next week.
The forthcoming report is seen as being of great interest because of the
expectations over Iran's intention to acquire a nuclear weapon, as a number of
Western countries are considering the imposition of further sanctions at a
time when press reports suggest the possibility of a military strike against
Tehran.
In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said launching a strike
against Tehran would be a "mistake."
He said in a meeting with his Irish counterpart that launching such a
strike would have terrible consequences. (end)
