KUWAIT, May 26 (KUNA) -- Air conditioners are the biggest electricity
guzzlers in the State of Kuwait under the harsh weather conditions at most
time of the year, an engineer specialized in power technologies said Thursday.
She added that air conditioners consume 70 percent of the total electric
load during prime time, and 45 percent of the annual power consumption.
The previous remark was made by engineer Hanai Al-Taqi during a lecture
titled "Energy in Kuwait," that was organized by energy technologies
department of the Environment and Urban Development Division at the Kuwait
Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) within a program including two other
scientific lectures.
Al-Taqi said that the individual high consumption of electric power is due
to some factors of consumption waste which is prompted by the very low cost of
electricity in Kuwait in what pushes up the electric load to range between 6
to 8 percent compared to industrialized countries in which the electric load
ranges between 2 to 3 percent.
Finally, she said that in view of the increasingly continued consumption of
electricity, the Ministry of Electricity and Water is investing huge funds in
building new power plants to generate more electricity and to cover the
necessary fuel cost, noting that current statistics show that 55 percent of
the local fuel is used in the electricity and water sector. (end)
