Iraqi judicial council releases some 13,000 prisoners

BAGHDAD, March 20 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council said Sunday that it has released around 13,000 prisoners during the last two months, and that it is continuing to work effortlessly to complete unsolved cases.
The comment came in a statement by the council's director Medhat Al-Mahmoud, who was reiterating Premier Nouri Al-Maliki's sentiments, after an announcement he made on Saturday, that legal assurances would be provided to detainees, and their cases finalized in the quickest manner possible.
During January and February, some 12,877 suspects - some found innocent and others pardoned - were released by Iraqi authorities, Al-Mahmoud noted.
He called on Iraqi judicial employees to practice further efforts and work after hours in ensuring the release of innocent suspects.
Dozens of Iraqis marched onto the streets on Friday, calling for the release of their loved ones locked up in the country's jails. (end) ahh.sd KUNA 201435 Mar 11NNNN
