MOSCOW, Dec 31 (KUNA) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday that the Israeli settlement actions in Palestinian territories were the main obstacle facing the peace process.
Speaking to Vesti television channel here, Lavrov said it was unfortunate that US efforts failed in resuming direct negotiations among the Palestinians and Israelis.
Efforts are ongoing for holding an urgent meeting for the Quartet Committee for peace in the Middle East, he said.
The United States, the European Union (EU), and the United Nations realize the need for holding a meeting with the attendance of representative of Arab countries and the Arab League, he added.
Lavrov said he was optimistic of the agreement between the International group and Iran on holding a meeting in Istanbul in January, expressing hope that an agreement would be reached on the Iranian nuclear issue.
Meanwhile, he condemned the bombardment of North Korea to South Korean Island, criticizing the military escalation in South Korea and its insistence to continue military maneuvers.(END)
