KHARTOUM, July 31 (KUNA) -- Darfur southern government gave the Sudan's
Darfur peacekeeping mission, the joint UN-African Union force in Darfur
(UNAMID), 48 hours to deliver six suspects wanted for their involvement in
violent incidents occurred in camp Kalma, the second largest displaced persons
camp in Darfur.
The Deputy governor of Darfur southern government Abdul-Kareem Moussa said
in a telephone call to KUNA that Darfur's capital Nyala has been holding high
level contacts with UNAMID regarding surrendering or the delivery of those
suspects, including a high level delegation who will arrive tomorrow to end
the dispute, as result the ultimatum was given for UNAMID.
Moussa also warned that other measures will be taken if the suspects were
not handed over, noting that thousands of displaced persons fled the camp
after clashes last week.
Meanwhile, UNAMID refused to comment, but said that five days ago there
received five local rebel leaders who fled to UNAMID police base after the
clashes in camp Kalma, which used to provide shelter to around 100,000
refugees.
However it is not clear whether those five were the same wanted suspects by
Darfur southern government.
Clashes in camp Kalma resulted in killing five people and dozens were
injured.
Last night, United Nations Security Council has extended mandate of its
peacekeeping mission in Sudan's western Darfur region for another year.
The 15-nation security council agreed unanimously to the mission's
extension, telling UNAMID to focus primarily on protecting civilians and aid
deliveries. (end)
