SIRT, Libya, March 21 (KUNA) -- Libyan city of Sirt hosts Monday
preparatory meetings at the level of permanent representatives for the 22nd
Arab Summit, due here on March 27-28.
Kuwait's permanent representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Abdullah
Al-Mansour is heading his country's delegation to the meetings, which will
prepare the draft of the 27-article agenda over a host of political, economic,
security, social, cultural and legal cooperation.
The permanent representatives will refer the draft agenda and draft
resolutions to the preparatory meeting of the Arab foreign ministers, due on
March 25.
Senior officials in the Arab Economic and Social Council are to hold
another preparatory meeting tomorrow to prepare the economic and social aspect
of the summit, before referring the draft resolutions to the meeting of the
council that will be held at the ministerial level next Wednesday.
Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs Mohammad
Al-Tuwaijri said Sunday the economic file would consist of many issues
including a Libyan proposal to establish green belts in the Arab countries.
Speaking to KUNA, Al-Tuwaijri said the officials would follow up the
implementation of resolutions of the Arab Economic Summit that was held in
Kuwait in January 2009, and the initiative of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait
Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to establish a USD-two-billion fund to
support small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs).
The Fund is managed by Kuwait-based Arab Fund for Economic and Social
Development. Each of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia contributed with USD 500 million
to the fund.
Arab League Deputy Secretary General Ahmad bin Hilli said the permanent
representatives would be discussing a Yemeni initiative to backing common Arab
action, a Syrian initiative to address Arab-Arab conflicts and a report over
the Arab Council for Peace and Security.
Bin Hilli told reporters the ambassadors would also discuss an Arab plan to
salvage occupied Al-Quds, or Jerusalem, where the Palestinian delegation would
present a detailed report about the Israeli violations against the Palestinian
people since 1967 until 2010.
The permanent representatives, he added, would discuss the Arab peace
initiative, backing the budget of the Palestinian Authority, the steadfastness
of the Palestinian people, the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, supporting and
voicing solidarity with Lebanon, and the recent parliamentary elections in
Iraq.
The agenda of the summit, said bin Hilli, also included the situation in
Sudan, the reconstruction and development of troubled Darfur, the Arab
position vis-a-vis the International Criminal Court's (ICC) genocide charges
against Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, in addition to supporting Comoros.
The permanent representatives are to discuss the statute of the Arab
Parliament ahead of approval by the Arab leaders, ways of fighting
international terrorism and Iran's occupation of three UAE's islands - Abu
Moussa, Greater and Lesser Tunbs.
Bin Hilli said they would also discuss consequences of the Lockerbei case
and the US unilateral sanctions against Syria and Sudan.
They will explore a united position to clearning the Middle East region
from weapons of mass destrucion (WMD) including nuclear arms, the boosting the
peaceful use of nuclear energy and exploring renewable energy sources.
They discuss promotion of the Arab language, a proposal to hold an Arab
Cultural Summit, further promotion of human rights culture, climate change,
cooperation with Africa and Europe, activating the Euro-Med partnership,
Arab-Asian cooperation and Arab-South America cooperation. (end)
