In a first, Nowruz will inspire world to promote harmony - Ban Ki-moon
Politics    3/18/2010 9:09:00 PM

UNITED NATIONS, March 18 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday that the International Day of Nowruz, observed for the first time this year following a General Assembly decision last month, is an opportunity for people around the world to promote harmony and foster peace.
"As we commemorate this first International Day of Nowruz, I hope countries and people around the world will draw on this festival's history and customs to promote harmony with the natural world and foster global peace and goodwill, " Ban said in a message to mark for the first time the occasion which coincides with March 21st.
The Assembly's decision to recognize the International Day of Nowruz is "evidence of a growing global awareness of the holiday's significance not only in the regions where it is celebrated but around the world," he added.
For more than 3,000 years, when the sun crosses the equator and the northern hemisphere enters spring, some 300 million peoples in the Balkans, Black Sea Basin, Caucasus, Central Asia, Middle East and other regions carry out their own special traditions in celebration of Nowruz (a festival of Persian origin meaning 'new day').
These rituals, from repainting homes to visiting friends to preparing symbolic meals, "are infused with a spirit of renewal and can inspire not only those conducting them but all people," Ban noted in his message.(end) sj.mao KUNA 182109 Mar 10NNNN
