ISTANBUL, Feb 28 (KUNA) -- Two PKK members were arrested in the province
of Mardin in Southeast Turkey, Turkish authorities announced here on Sunday.
The two were picked up as they entered Turkish territory via Syria with
fake passports, said the Daily Millet on its website, citing a statement
issued by the Turkish Army.
The two men were charged with being members of the outlawed PKK, said the
daily newspaper. In the past few months Turkish authorities have been rounding
up PKK members following a spate of violence against Turkish targets by the
banned organization.
Since 1978 the PKK has been waging a campaign of violence against the
Turkish government in a bid to establish an independent entity for the Kurdish
population in Turkey. Over 45,000 people have fallen victims to this long
struggle. (end)
