WASHINGTON, Feb 24 (KUNA) -- Up to four Guantanamo prisoners have been
transferred from the detention facility to Spain and Albania, the US Justice
Department announced here Wednesday.
The Department said in two separate statements that a detainee from the
Palestinian territories has been transferred to Spain, while three other
detainees have been transferred to the custody and control of the Government
of Albania.
It indicated that the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a
"comprehensive review" of these cases, and as a result of that review, "which
examined a number of factors, including security issues," the detainees were
approved for transfer by "unanimous consent" among all the agencies involved
in the Task Force.
The identity of the Palestinian individual is being withheld for security
and privacy reasons at the request of the Government of Spain but the three
transferred to Albania were identified as Saleh Bin Hadi Asasi, a native of
Tunisia, Sharif Fati Ali al Mishad, a native of Egypt, and Abdul Rauf Omar
Mohammad Abu al Qusin, a native of Libya.
Since 2002, over 580 detainees have departed Guantanamo Bay for other
destinations, where there remains to be 188 detainees remain at the detention
camp. (end).
