Burns, Al-Assad discuss Middle East developments
Politics    2/17/2010 2:06:00 PM

DAMASCUS, Feb 17 (KUNA) -- US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs William Burns met Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad here Wednesday discussing regional developments and ties between their countries.
Burns arrived to Damascus from Beirut on Tuesday, heading a delegation of senior officials, to hold talks with Al-Assad, Syria's Foreign Minister Waleed Al-Moallim, and other officials.
His talks with Syrian officials will focus on tension between Syria and Israel following the Israeli threats to Syria and Lebanon, Iraqi elections, and Iran's role in the region and its nuclear issue.
Burns is the highest-ranking US Department of State official to visit Syria since the election of Barack Obama as president.
The visit coincided with the appointment of a US ambassador to Syria.
The United States recalled its ambassador in Syria Margaret Scobey in 2005 after the assassination of Lebanon's former prime minister Rafiq Al-Hariri.
Syria Today newspaper said Wednesday that Damascus was keen on establishing good relations with the United States to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East.
The Syrian-US relations improved gradually since Obama came to office more than one year ago, it noted.
The language of threats stopped and visits of US officials to Syria were witnessed, it added. (end) tk.ris KUNA 171406 Feb 10NNNN
