BRUSSELS, Jan 27 (KUNA) -- The European Union and NATO organised a
high-level conference on women, peace and security here Wednesday to raise
awareness of the upcoming 10th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution
1325 on women, peace and security.
The participants concluded that all EU and NATO-led operations must comply
with UN resolutions relating to women, peace and security, and must be
supported by appropriate training, education, and monitoring mechanisms.
"I have come to realise that the security of women is the best indicator of
the security of a nation. Unless we enhance the rights and responsibilities of
women globally, our foreign policy goals will remain unachievable," said
Margot Wallstrom, Vice-President of the European Commission to the large
audience of 400 particpants.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said "we must empower women
and confront victimisation if we are to deal successfully with the security
challenges of the 21st century."
"This is a task not only for NATO, but a challenge that the Alliance, the
European Union, and civil society actors must address jointly," he added. (end)
