UNITED NATIONS, Jan 20 (KUNA) -- The Security Council Al-Qaida and Taliban
Sanctions Committee late Tuesday added the names of two Individuals and one
Entity to its consolidated List of individuals and entities subject to the
assets freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo, pursuant to council resolution
1904 adopted last month under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
The three additions linked to Al-Qaida in Yemen are the group Al-Qaeda in
the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and two of its leaders, Nasir Al-Wahishi and Said
Al-Shihri.
The panel's additions, at the request of the US, demonstrate the
committee's intent to keep the Consolidated List up-to-date, and to ensure
that this tool, to be employed by all states, continues to be aligned with the
evolving threat posed by Al-Qaida, the Taliban, and those individuals and
entities associated with them.
US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said in a statement distributed here
that the panel's actions "strengthen international efforts to degrade the
capabilities of AQAP."
AQAP is a Yemen-based terrorist organization that has claimed
responsibility for numerous terrorist acts targeting Saudi Arabia, Korea,
Yemen, and the United States since its inception in January 2009.
Two weeks ago, she recalled, President Barack Obama confirmed that the
individual responsible for the attempted attack on Christmas day on Northwest
Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan, Omar Farouk Abdulmotaleb,
had ties to AQAP.
Last month, the Security Council reaffirmed the global consensus against
Al-Qaeda through its adoption of resolution 1904, which strengthened and
improved the sanctions regime against some 500 individuals and entities on the
consolidated list.
In line with this new resolution, the United States supports the Council's
ongoing work to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat Al-Qaeda's networks and
eliminate its ability to carry out violent attacks, Rice said. (end).
