US soldier, five civilians killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Jan 1 (KUNA) -- A US soldier and five Afghan civilians have been killed in Afghanistan, officials and residents said on Friday.
A statement from NATO headquarters here said the US soldier died of non-battle related injuries in eastern Afghanistan yesterday. The statement did not disclose nature of the incident and its exact location.
Separately, a roadside bomb killed five civilians in Bala Murghab district of Badghis province on Friday morning.
Police officials in the area said the civilian car was traveling between Bala Murghab and Ghormach districts when it struck the improvised explosive device (IED).
The victims included two men, the same number of women and a child. The slain are the first civilian casualties of the New Year in the ongoing war and insurgency in Afghanistan.
Locals said all those killed in the roadside bomb were members of the same family. No group has so far claimed responsibility for planting the bomb. (end) gk.tg KUNA 011700 Jan 10NNNN
