Pakistani forces kill 8 militants, arrest 48

ISLAMABAD, Dec 31 (KUNA) -- In the ongoing military operations in Waziristan and Swat areas, the security forces Thursday said that about eight more militants and a soldier were killed and forty-eight others apprehended.
Security forces carried out search and clearance operation at Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan tribal agency, and killed four militants while eighteen others were apprehended, said Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement.
However, security sources told KUNA that acting on a tip-off, the security forces conducted a raid on a local private hospital in Wana Wednesday night. They said forces exchanged fierce fire with militants that continued till Thursday morning. Sources said that about four Arab militants and two civilians were killed in the incident.
Giving details of the Waziristan military operation during last twenty-four hours, the ISPR statement said that forces conducted search operation at Brown Ridge near Jandola sector and surrounding area and recovered cache of arms and ammunition.
Militants fired at security forces near Barai Sar and at a checkpost near Saeed Camp, it said, adding forces responded effectively. However, a soldier was killed in the attack.
Meanwhile, the statement said further, forces conducted search and clearance operation at Bangai Banda area of Swat valley and killed 4 militants.
Also, 26 suspects were arrested and four voluntarily surrendered themselves to security forces during operation in others areas of the valley, said the statement. (end) amn.tg KUNA 311810 Dec 09NNNN
