WASHINGTON, Dec 31 (KUNA) -- The United States remains ready to takes steps
to improve bilateral relations with Burma, a senior spokesman said late
Wednesday.
State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said, "The United States reaffirms its
unwavering support for an independent, peaceful, prosperous, and democratic
Burma. The US stands ready to take steps to improve bilateral relations based
on reciprocal and meaningful efforts by the Burmese government to fulfill the
Burmese peoples' democratic aspirations."
Last month, a US envoy visited Burma for the first time in 14 years for
talks to promote engagement and push for progress toward implementing
universal human rights and democratic principles, according to the Obama
administration.
In his statement, Kelly also expressed the "warmest wishes to the people of
Burma" for the upcoming 62nd anniversary of Burma's independence from British
rule, January 4.(end)
