Sudanese gov''t downplays ICC call for Bashir''s arrest next month
Politics    11/21/2009 9:15:00 PM

KHARTOUM, Nov 21 (KUNA) -- The Sudanese government downplayed on Saturday calls made by Amnesty International (AI) to arrest Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir during his participation next month in climate summit hosted by Denmark.
AI calls echoed its hostile stance toward Sudan, and the invitation to attend the summit is extended to the Sudanese government not the Sudanese President, Sudanese minister of state in the information ministry Kamal Obaid said in a press release.
Earlier, Christopher Keith Hall, the Senior Legal Adviser at Amnesty International said that Denmark needs to make it clear that it will arrest President Al-Bashir if he travels to Copenhagen.
"The International Criminal Court needs the cooperation of its member states. Under the Rome Statute, which established the ICC, Denmark has a duty to arrest and surrender any person within its territory who is subject to an arrest warrant issued by the ICC," Hall added.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant against Al-Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur earlier this year. (end) hhi.mb KUNA 212115 Nov 09NNNN
