KABUL, Nov 18 (KUNA) -- Afghan and international troops have killed more
than 30 Taliban in a ground-air operation in southeastern zone of the country.
The operation was conducted just a day before the oath-taking of President
Hamid Karzai for his second term in office for which security has already been
beefed up in and around the central capital Kabul. Local officials said the joint operation was conducted in the country's
southeastern province of Paktika. Spokesman for the provincial governor Hameedullah Zhwak told journalists on
Wednesday that 23 Taliban were killed in Barmal district of Paktika province. The spokesman said both ground and air troops participated in the
operation, which was conducted on the basis of intelligence reports.
Afghanistan's Paktika province is joining border with the troubled Waziristan
tribal region of the neighbouring Pakistani where the Pakistani security
forces are engaged in an operation against militants over the past one month. A separate statement from the Ministry of Defence in Kabul said that more
than a dozen militants were killed in the southern and other zones of the
country. The operations were conducted by Afghan and international troops on Tuesday
and Wednesday, said the statement. The Afghan forces have beefed up security ahead of the oath-taking of
President Hamid Karzai, which will be held at the fortified Presidential
Palace on Thursday. Diplomatic sources said the ceremony would be attended by dignitaries from
Pakistan, Canada, UK, US and other countries. Karzai key rival in the August
20 presidential polls Abdullah Abdullah and his supporters have expressed
reservations about Karzai's election. Abdullah, who was ended as runner-up in the August 20 polls, refused to
participate in the second round of polls declared to be held on November 7.
