Arab Customs Union Cmte meets in Cairo
Economics    11/11/2009 6:47:00 PM

CAIRO, Nov 11 (KUNA) -- The Arab Customs Union Committee started its 11th session at the Arab League's headquarters here on Wednesday with representatives of the finance ministries of the league's members attending.
Kuwait's delegation to the two-day event is led by Supervisor of the Arab Affairs Division of the Finance Ministry Ali Sha'aban.
The meeting, presided over by Director-General of the Arab and Islamic Affairs Division of the Saudi Finance Ministry Hussein Bin-Shweish Al-Shweish, probes the suggestions of the Arab countries on the enforcement of the resolution to create an Arab Customs Union with a view to achieving a Common Market by 2020 and increasing the inter-Arab trade.
The resolution, adopted by the Arab leaders during the Kuwait Arab Economic, Social and Development Summit on January 19-20, 2009, provides that all Arab countries should finalize the requirements of the customs union by 2015.
The committee is scheduled to mull a report on the follow-up of the preparations for launching the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA), the detailed country of origin regulations, and the liberation of the inter-Arab trade and services.
All regulations relating to the single customs tariff, the single customs law and the executive program of the customs union should be finalized before 2015 in order to set the stage for the Arab Common Market, due to go operational in 2020, according to the Kuwait summit resolution.
Today's meeting focused on the framework of the executive program of the union and the observations of the constituent member countries on the basic legal order of the union. (end) mfm.rg.gb KUNA 111847 Nov 09NNNN
