US denies reports Obama made decision on Afghanistan-Pakistan strategy
Politics    11/10/2009 9:32:00 PM

WASHINGTON, Nov 10 (KUNA) -- White House spokesman Robert Gibbs on Tuesday emphatically denied news reports that President Barack Obama had made a decision on the new US strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and said Obama will meet with his national security team at the White House again on Wednesday to discuss four options related to that strategic reassessment.
"The President will have an opportunity to discuss four options with his national security team tomorrow," Gibbs said during a meeting with reporters traveling aboard Air Force One as Obama headed to Fort Hood, Texas, to address US troops affected by the massacre there on Thursday. "Anybody that tells you that the President has made a decision or -- what was the artfully used term last night, 'tentatively agreed to' -- does not have, in all honesty, the slightest idea what they are talking about. The President has yet to make a decision." Gibbs noted that one news reporter on Saturday asked him about a story that Obama would approve an additional 34,000 US troops for Afghanistan, while another reporter on Monday asked about a story that the President would approve nearly 40,000 such troops.
The Associated Press and CBS News reported that a decision had been made, Gibbs said, "and I will tell it to you now: The President has not made a decision." "The President is doing this in a very purposeful and deliberate way to get the best decision, and I promise you that when he makes that decision we will let you know," Gibbs said. "And as I have said before, the President will take the time to explain that decision and its reasoning to the American people." (end) rm.bs KUNA 102132 Nov 09NNNN
