Three American hikers held in Iran innocent, should be released - White House
Politics    11/10/2009 12:34:00 AM

House WASHINGTON, Nov 9 (KUNA) -- Responding to reports that three US hikers being held in Iran since last summer have been charged with espionage, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs on Monday said the Americans are innocent and should be freed.
Shane Bauer, Josh Fattal and Sarah Shroud "are innocent young people who should be released by the Iranian government, and their release should be expedited," Gibbs said during a White House briefing.
US officials have not heard confirmation of the charges through Swiss officials, Gibbs noted. The Swiss serve as intermediaries between Iran and the United States, which do not have diplomatic relations.
The events of the next few days and the past few days are important for Iranians to contemplate as they make decisions moving forward, Gibbs said. The Iranians must essentially agree to their previous agreement on the Iranian nuclear research reactor, "and I think the world is watching and waiting for their conclusive decisions on that," he said.
Gibbs noted that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev over the weekend said that if Iran fails to take steps in its control to demonstrate its responsibility (on the nuclear issue) to the world, then "sanctions may be necessary". (end) rm.bs KUNA 100034 Nov 09NNNN
