MARRAKECH, Nov 4 (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign
Minister Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah called here for
increasing coordination and the exchange of expertise between the Group of
Eight (G8) and the Middle East states regarding social security. Speaking at the sixth Forum for the Future, which concluded here on
Wednesday, Al-Sabah said that the world was facing international challenges
and dangers that threatened its stability and security due to climate change
directly. That would lead to the increase of the prices of food and major products,
in addition to security challenges like terrorism, the spread of weapons of
mass destruction, and human rights violations, he said. He pointed out that Kuwait provided, since its independence in 1961, aid to
developing countries on numerous occasions. He said Kuwait supported more than 100 countries with a total of over USD
14 billion, which equals 1.31 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). That exceeds the percentage agreed on internationally for this purpose by
more than 0.61 percent, he added. Upon the initiative of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber
Al-Sabah, Kuwait established the Decent Life Fund with a capital of USD 100
million to assist developing countries to deal with the increase of food
prices and to improve their agriculture sectors, he noted. Moreover, the Gulf state allocated USD 300 million to combat poverty in
Africa through the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Sheikh Mohammad said. He also emphasized that Kuwait gave priority to reform in several fields
like education, health, freedoms, and women's rights, because it believed in
the rule of law and order. Kuwait ranked first in human development among Arab states according to the
United Nations Development Program's (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Arab States,
he said. In addition, it ranked first in the Middle East in press freedom according
to Reporters Without Borders organization, he said. Al-Sabah expressed concern over the continuous threat to peace and security
in the Arab region due to the Israeli government's obstinacy and violations of
international resolutions and agreements. Still on the Arab region, he highlighted that Kuwait supported regional and
international efforts to assist Iraq to deal with its security, political, and
economic challenges in a way that preserves its unity and enables it to live
in peace with itself and with its neighbors. He warned against calls promoting extremism and discrimination which goes
against human values and urged stressing dialogue and tolerance as the lone
option before the international community.(end)
