Israeli police tightens grip on Jerusalem
Military and Security    10/9/2009 12:30:00 PM

RAMALLAH, Oct 9 (KUNA) -- Israeli police imposed even more strict military measures in Jerusalem Friday as Palestinians are to perform the Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque to prevent further clashes.
Radio Israel said the Interior Minister Eliyahu Yishai announced that he accepted a police recommendation to put Jerusalem security on high alert to prevent further escalation.
This followed a call by Palestinian factions to consider today a "Day in support and Defense of Al-Aqsa Mosque and Al-Quds".
The Israeli forces imposed a siege on Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque area and prevented the entry of people less than 50 years old into the mosque to perform prayers.
Peaceful protests are expected to march from the occupied Palestinian territories to defend Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem.
Al-Aqsa endowment and heritage foundation meanwhile affirmed that a strong action of solidarity with Al-Aqsa Mosque and mobilization to the site is currently taking place and that around 200 Palestinians are staying in the mosque to prevent Israeli extremists and Israeli police from storming into the holy place.
Earlier reports said that violent clashes erupted in the past few days in the Old Town and Al-Aqsa Mosque when a group of radicals tried to break into the mosque's courtyards to perform religious rites. The Palestinians responded to the attempt and scores of people were injured in clashes with the Israeli police.(end) nq.mar KUNA 091230 Oct 09NNNN
