Arms trafficker nabbed close to Iraq-Syria border -- US Army

BAGHDAD, Sept 22 (KUNA) -- Special Iraqi troops arrested an arms trafficker in the town of Al-Qaem close to the Iraqi-Syrian borders, according to a statement released by the US Army on Tuesday.
The trafficker, whose nationality was not revealed, was nabbed according to an arrest warrant in the region of Al-Rummaniah on September 18. Caches of ammunition and rockets were found in the detainee's house, and were confiscated.
The statement indicated that the operation was carried out in coordination with American personnel.
Authorities have been clamping down on activists smuggling arms across the borders of the country.
Relations between and Iraq and Syria have recently deteriorated in shadow of demands by Baghdad that Damascus hand over Baath elements suspected of masterminding deadly bombings in the country. (end) ah.rk KUNA 221450 Sep 09NNNN
