ALGIERS, June 8 (KUNA) -- The Algerian government rejected Monday a draft
bill presented by MPs for lifting the death penalty from the state's law.
A statement issued by the Lower Chamber said that the government rejected
the proposal, which had been presented by the opposition Culture and Democracy
Bloc, because the Algerian society was allegedly "unprepared" for such a move.
A heated debate on the death penalty erupted in October between political
parties and religious clerics. (end)
