ISTANBUL, June 6 (KUNA) -- Turkey, on Saturday, sent more troops and tanks
to its borders with Iraq in a bid to crack down on banned PKK (Kurdistan
Workers' Party).
Seventy army trucks, with soldiers and heavy artillery on board, headed to
the border province of Sirnak, Turkish daily Milliyet said on its website.
The move follows intensive military deployment in the last few weeks, the
daily said, adding that the army, and for almost a year now, was on high alert
pending orders to make an incursion to northern Iraq and clamp down on the
separatist militant organization.
PKK's goal has been, since 1978, to create an independent, socialist
Kurdish state in Kurdistan, a geographical region that comprises parts of
southeastern Turkey, northeastern Iraq, northeastern Syria and northwestern
Iran. (end)
