19 militants, four policemen killed in Afghan fighting
Military and Security    5/31/2009 4:46:00 PM

KABUL, May 31 (KUNA) -- Nineteen militants, including a commander, and four Afghan policemen were killed while four suspected militants were arrested by the foreign troops in separate clashes and operations in different parts of Afghanistan on Sunday.
According to Afghan officials, 18 militants were killed during a clash with NATO and Afghan troops in the country's western province of Farah.
NATO officials in Kabul also confirmed the fighting and the death toll among the Taliban. A spokesman for the NATO troops said the clash erupted when militants attacked the joint convoy of Afghan and foreign troops with mortars in Khak-e-Safed district of Farah province.
Four policemen were killed as militants attack their checkpoint early Sunday in the same province, said deputy police chief of the province Nabi Popal.
In a separate clash with Taliban, Afghan police claimed killing a known commander in the northern province of Kunduz.
Commander Saqibullah was killed and his other colleagues managed to escape following a firefight in Haqtash district of the province, said senior police officer in the province Abdul Rahman.
Afghanistan's northern and western zones are known for their comparative calm while the southern and eastern zones are considered the most volatile areas in the embattled country.
However, since the start of the current summer season, Taliban militants are proving their presence in these (northern and western) comparatively peaceful zones by engaging the Afghan and foreign troops in fighting as well as carrying out landmine and suicide attacks against them.
A day earlier, governor of Kunduz province and his driver were injured as his motorcade came under a remote-controlled bomb attack in the neighbouring province of Takhar, also considered another peaceful area in the northern zone.
Meanwhile, the US-led coalition troops said they had arrested four suspects during a raid in the southern Helmand province on Sunday.
A statement from the coalition forces Bagram base said the four men were captured in Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand of suspicion of ties to a local Taliban commander involved in coordinating suicide attacks, moving weapons and facilitating movement of foreign fighters.
