By Salwa Jandoubi NEW YORK, May 18 (KUNA) -- Shazia Rafi, Secretary-General of Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) on Monday said she was "very pleased" that four women where elected to the Kuwaiti Parliament as a result of the recent democratic elections.
She told KUNA that her organisation has been watching the democratic process unfolding over the weekend. "It was a tough fight. Women got the right to vote a few years ago and I am glad they persevered." She said she invited the Speaker of the Kuwaiti Parliament time ago to attend the PGA 31st Annual Forum, scheduled for next October 20-22 in Washington D.C., and expects him to bring with him a Parliamentary delegation, including women now that they were elected.
This year's Forum will focus on Environment, Enery management and the Global Economy.
PGA is a non-profit, non-partisan international network of over 1,300 legislators in more than 100 elected parliaments around the globe.
It aims to promote peace, democracy, the rule of law, human rights, sustainable development and population issues by informing, convening, and mobilizing parliamentarians to realize these goals. (end) sj.bs KUNA 182334 May 09NNNN
