KHARTOUM, May 15 (KUNA) -- The Sudanese foreign ministry relayed a
strongly-worded message on Friday night to the ambassador of Chad here
protesting the air strike by Chadian airforce jets on Sudanese territory.
Sudan's Acting Undersecretary of the foreign ministry Ali Yousif made a
statement to the press in which he explained that three jet fighters from Chad
had violated Sudanese air space earlier today and bombarded the area of Jabal
Sindo which is 60 km inside the Sudanese territory and west of the city of
Janiniya, the capital of West Darfur.
Calling the attack a flagrant aggression, Yousif said investigations were
ongoing to determine the extent of damage to life and property resulting from
the bombardment.
The Sudanese government, he said, had apprised the UN security council, the
Arab League, the African Union and the Libyan ambassador to Sudan of the
latest problems on the Sudanese-Chadian border including today's air strike.
He added that he will inform the government of Qatar about today's attack,
since Qatar had brokered a truce between Chad and Sudan, involving
non-aggression on each other's borders.
Chad had of late accused Sudan of supporting an attack by Chadian rebels on
May 4, lasting one week before the Chadian army could overwhelm the rebels
decisively.
For years Sudan and Chad have been trading accusations that one backed the
other's rebels. Up to seven agreements signed by them to end the state of
tension between them, the last of which signed in Qatar, have failed. (end)
