Int''l org. calls on Israel to lift ban on movement of journalists
Media   11/20/2008 10:47:00 PM

PARIS, Nov 20 (KUNA) -- An international press freedom organization called here Thursday on Israel to lift a ban preventing foreign journalists from entering the Gaza Strip via the Eretz crossing .
Reporters Without Borders revealed that it addressed a letter to the Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak minister on Wednesday, as did the heads of some of the world's biggest news media to the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert asking the two officials to lift the ban.
The Organization said in the letter "To our knowledge, no foreign journalist has been allowed to enter this autonomous territory at the Eretz crossing since 6 November." It added that "No previous restriction on the movements of foreign reporters ever lasted so long." "This unilateral and unjustified ban has seriously impacted their ability to work. The Tel Aviv-based Foreign Press Association has issued two statements condemning the ban," according to the Organization.
It stressed that the closing of the Gaza Strip to the foreign press "not only prevents international public opinion from being informed about the humanitarian crisis unfolding there, but also draws attention to the coercive measures taken by Israel and engenders the suspicion that this is a deliberate attempt to cover up what is happening." Reporters Without Borders noted in the letter that "for the sake of not prolonging a flagrant violation of the media's freedom of movement and freedom to work, we urge you to do what is necessary to put an end to this drastic and pernicious measure."
