ISAF arrests senior Taliban commander
Military and Security    9/29/2008 7:21:00 PM

KABUL, Sept 29 (KUNA) -- The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) announced it had arrested a senior Taliban leader in southern Afghanistan. A NATO spokesman said the Taliban leader Ahmad Shah was arrested by the Afghan and NATO troops in Uruzgan province of the country on September 22.
"Prior to his capture, Ahmad Shah was a Taliban leader involved in planning and execution of attacks against Afghan army and ISAF soldiers. In addition, he commanded about 50 fighters who operated in civilian-populated rural areas of the province," said Brigadier General Richard Blanchette.
He said Ahmad Shah's capture would significantly disrupt Taliban efforts to conduct actions in Uruzgan. "This is particularly positive because Shah was a lynchpin in operations that have killed civilians in the past," said the spokesman. (end) gk.ajs KUNA 291921 Sep 08NNNN
