US official report: Kuwait Constitution provides for absolute freedom of belief
Religion    9/21/2008 1:00:00 AM

WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Constitution provides for absolute freedom of belief and for freedom of religious practice in accordance with established customs, an official US report confirmed Saturday.
"There was no change in the status of respect for religious freedom by the Government. Freedom of belief was respected, and the Government did not intervene in worship services," noted the 2008 International Religious Freedom Report released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and labor in the State Department.
"The Constitution states that Islam is the state religion and that Shari'a (Islamic law) is a main source of legislation," it added.
"The U.S. Government discusses religious freedom with the Government of Kuwait as part of its overall policy to promote human rights," it said. "The Embassy worked with religious leaders and government officials on specific issues related to religious rights".
The report comes one day after President George W. Bush welcomed at the White House Kuwait Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser al-Mohammad al-Sabah and held what Bush described as a "very good discussion." "Kuwait is a strategic partner of the United States. And our discussion was befitting of our strategic partnership," Said Bush after the meeting. (end) amz.bs KUNA 210100 Sep 08NNNN
