ISTANBUL, July 26 (KUNA) -- A Turkish soldier was killed and another was
injured on Saturday in clashes with a number of Kurdish rebels, near the
northeastern Turkish borders with Russia, said a Turkish Army official.
"Hurriyet" online newspaper quoted officials as saying that the clashes
took place at Kaczman city near Karszn governorate, northeast of the country,
where army operations commenced a number of days back against militants
sneaking in from their bases in Iraq.
The army have announced two days ago that it waged air raids at locations
belonging to the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) in northern Iraq.
The army escalated its operation against the PKK rebels in December 2007,
when it waged a series of air raids against targets in northern Iraq, as well
as one week land incursion into Iraqi Kurdistan.
Ankara believes there are more than 2,000 Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq.
