MNF reports prisoner-release operation, releases 14 Iraqi detainees
Military and Security    7/14/2008 11:44:00 AM

BAGHDAD, July 14 (KUNA) -- Multi National Forces in Iraq announced Monday the release of 14 detainees who were back at their communities on Saturday.
An MNF press release said that a total of 95 detainees were released in 2008 as part of Operation Lion's Return.
"Each month, Soldiers from 2nd BCT's 2-101 Brigade Special Troops Battalion pick up detainees from Camp Cropper and transport them to Camp Victory, where Soldiers throughout the brigade's operational environment receive them and escort the detainees back to their respective communities," it said.
Before their release, detainees placed their right hand on the Quran, with the presence of tribe leaders, and took an oath to uphold the peace and strive to be productive members of the community, it added.
The release quoted a squadron commander from MND-B, Lt. Col. John Hermeling, as saying that the operation helps in the reconciliation of those that committed illegal actions against the government.
He said, "Our hope is that they recognize that they've got another chance," adding that "They've got the opportunity to work and be productive members of society." Around 21,000 Iraqis are held under arrest by the MNF in two jails in Basra and Baghdad.(end) ahh.ris KUNA 141144 Jul 08NNNN
