BAGHDAD, May 10 (KUNA) -- Thirty militants were killed by Iraqi forces in
an operation in Sadr City, according to the Special Operations Command on
Saturday, while medical sources said 20 people were killed and 115 others were
wounded in clashes between militants on one side and Iraqi and US forces on
the other.
A military source told KUNA that the armed operation lasted between 9:00 p.
m. (local time) yesterday and ended at 8:00 this morning, and included air
raids by US planes, targeting militant locations with mortar shells.
Witnesses told KUNA that they heard an exchange of fire in different areas
of the city.
Meanwhile, Baghdad Operations Command said in a statement that an operation
had been waged in Sadr City in which 30 militants were killed and nine
arrested, adding that these were found to be responsible for planting
explosive devices and targeted homes.
Mover, a medical source, requesting anonymity, said Sadr Hospital received
the bodies of 15 men, as well as 54 wounded, among them women and children.
Al-Imam Hospital received five dead and 61 wounded.
This coincided with a statement by spokesman for the law enforcement plan
Major General Qassam Atta that Iraqi forces had tightened their grip on Sadr
City.
Since March 25, Sadr City been subjected to a series of searched and
inspections by authorities, as well a command of its entry and exit points.
