Sadrist MPs hit back at PM''s remarks
Politics    5/1/2008 10:30:00 PM

BAGHDAD, May 1 (KUNA) -- Iraq's Sadrist parliamentarians reacted Thursday to the remarks made by Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki yesterday.
"The remarks include a lot of misinformation, discrimination and maneuvers, " Spokesman of Sadrists MP Saleh Al-Ke'ili told reporters at Al-Rashid Hotel in downtown Baghdad.
"Misinformation leads to wrong decisions and misconceptions," he cautioned. Al-Maliki said Wednesday that Al-Sadr City, the stronghold of Iraq's Shiite Sadrists, was not under siege.
"This statement is totally wrong as the city is still besieged and its residents can get in and out only through one outlet, namely Al-Talebiya crossing point," the MP said, calling on the press to go there and see for themselves.
"Almost all parts of the city have been in blackout for a month," he complained.
He also lashed at the economic policies of Al-Maliki's government, asserting that the Iraqi people were suffering from skyrocketing prices of all commodities particularly the foodstuffs.
As for Al-Maliki's warning to Sadrist MPs against inciting sedition though their statements, Al-Ke'ili said the Iraqi constitution enshrined immunity for an MP to say whatever they liked.
"The Prime Minister was mistaken when he accused MPs, so he has to apology, " he underscored.
Meanwhile, Al-Ke'ili called on the parliament speaker and all MPs to reach a common position against the Prime Minister who refused to meet a parliamentary committee.
He also urged investigation into what he called "massacre of Al-Shuyoukh Marketplace and Sector Ten," in Al-Sadr city. (end) mhg.gb.
