By Talal al-Kandari (With photos) THE HAGUE, April 14 (KUNA) -- A Kuwaiti nuclear official called here Monday for enacting pieces of national legislation aiming to implement an international deal on the prohibition of chemical weapons.
Dr. Muhammad Buzubar, deputy chairman of a Kuwaiti national committee tasked with following up contacts with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, made the call in remarks to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the sidelines of the 2nd extraordinary session of the Conference on States Parties of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
An all-out approach should be put in place to adopt legislation bearing on the enforcement of the agreement in a way that should go in parallel with each state's constitutional requirements, he said.
He quoted the conferees as voicing much extreme concern that 105 states parties had not yet fully enacted thorough legislation in this respect.
The deal will largely contribute to establishing international peace and security through removing chemical weapons, setting fresh criteria for disarmament and nonproliferation, he added.
The number of states parties to the agreement has risen from 151 in 2003 to 183 for the time being. Only 12 countries have not yet signed or joined the deal, Buzubar said.
In conclusion, he voiced confidence that when all states parties join the deal, this would be an impetus to international efforts to fight terrorism.
Kuwait's delegation to the meetings is headed by Kuwait's Ambassador to the Netherlands Youssif Al-Enaizi and groups Brigadier Barak Abdulmohsin Al-Barjas, Jinan Bu-Shehri of the Ministry of Defense, Counselor Hamad Rashid Al-Merri of the Foreign Ministry, Advisor at Kuwait's embassy in the Hague Talal Al-Hajri and Faisal Al-Ameeri from Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC).
The headquarters of the Hague-based OPCW was opened in 1997. As many as 183 countries, including 11 Arab ones (among them all GCC states), have joined OPCW. (end) tm.mt KUNA 141540 Apr 08NNNN
